Qatar Stopover: 4-Star Hotels in Doha From $14 a Night (2026 Rules)
Rules on this page last verified 2026-07-09. Airlines change things; we re-check and date it.
Let's be precise, because most blogs are not: Qatar's stopover is not free. It is absurdly cheap. Connect through Doha on a Qatar Airways or oneworld ticket and you can book a 4-star hotel for $14 per person per night, a 5-star for $24, or a 5-star with beach access for $31. The free part is the visa: over 100 nationalities, US included, get a 96-hour transit visa on arrival at no cost.
The short version

|---|---|
| Transit window | Minimum 12 hours, up to 96 hours in Doha |
| Length | 1 to 4 nights, available in each direction |
| Who qualifies | Qatar Airways tickets, QR codeshares, and any oneworld member ticket transiting Doha |
| Visa | Free 96-hour transit visa on arrival for 100+ nationalities |
How it works
Qatar Airways runs the program through Discover Qatar, its own destination arm. You book your flights first, then bolt the stopover package on using your booking reference, either on qatarairways.com under the Qatar Stopover tab or directly at discoverqatar.qa. Pick your nights, pick your hotel tier, optionally add tours and transfers, pay the package price.
The 12-to-96-hour rule is the frame: your Doha connection needs at least 12 hours to count, and the free transit visa covers you up to 96.
How to book it, step by step
- Book any Qatar Airways or oneworld itinerary that connects in Doha with 12+ hours (use multi-city search to stretch the connection if needed).
- Go to discoverqatar.qa/stopover or the Qatar Stopover tab on qatarairways.com.
- Enter your booking reference and route.
- Choose nights (1-4), hotel tier, and any add-ons. Pay.
- Land in Doha, get the transit visa on arrival, go enjoy a five-star for the price of a hostel.
What's free and what's not
Free: the 96-hour transit visa (for eligible nationalities). Paid but heavily discounted: the hotel package. Not included: flights between terminals of your own plans, most meals, tours unless added.
Where people screw this up
- Calling it free. The visa is free. The hotel is $14+. Different thing, still a steal.
- Booking an 11-hour connection. Minimum is 12 hours or there is no package to book.
- Packing alcohol. Bringing alcohol into Qatar is illegal, transit visa or not.
- Assuming luggage storage runs 24/7 at the airport. It does not; check hours against your arrival time.
FAQ
Does it work on American Airlines or other oneworld tickets? Yes. The program explicitly covers oneworld member tickets with a qualifying Doha transit.
Can I do a stopover in both directions? Yes, 1 to 4 nights each way.
Is Doha worth 2 days? Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Corniche, and a desert safari fit comfortably in 48 hours. At $28 total for the hotel, the math is hard to argue with.
